Teeth Grinding/Bruxism Care at
Willeri Dental

It’s a common dental problem to grind or clench teeth at night. Since it occurs during sleeping hours, most people are unaware they do it unless informed by their spouse. It can also happy in the daytime and if left untreated, can adversely affect health in several ways:

  • Arthritis
  • Breakdown of the joints that control the opening and closing of our mouths (TMJ)
  • Chronic headaches
  • Inability to chew food properly
  • Muscle tenderness in our facial region
  • Tooth breakdown
  • Tooth wear and sensitivity

How Can You Manage Bruxism?

The management of bruxism typically requires a multi-faceted approach. It includes the use of muscle relaxants, stress management exercises and potential referral to a specialist. Along with these options, Willeri Dental offers a few other common ways to manage bruxism:

  • Nightguard – This is a customized acrylic splint worn while sleeping. It minimizes tooth wear by stopping the bruxing process. This also allows the muscles to relax and prevents damage to the temporomandibular joint.
  • Botulinum Toxin – While this is most commonly associated with cosmetic procedures, it can be injected directly into your jaw muscles to relax them. It works by relaxing the muscles so that they are not transmitting damaging forces to the teeth and joints. It has no impact on your day to day lifestyle. The injections may need to be reapplied periodically.
